Use of Nondisabled Subjects in AAC Research: Confessions of a Research Infidel
نویسنده
چکیده
This research forum pertains to the topic of subject selection in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) research. The following two papers present opposing views on the use of nondisabled persons in AAC research. Specifically, Higginbotham (1995) offers an argument in favor of the use of nondisabled persons as subjects, while Bedrosian (1995) addresses current limitations in using these individuals for AAC research purposes. Neither paper represents the sole research belief of the author involved. Rather, the intent in writing these papers was to highlight critical issues related to this topic in order to generate discussion among the readership of AAC. In the concluding paper, Higginbotham and Bedrosian (1995) bring together the issues previously discussed and present directions in subject selection for future AAC research.

Subject Selection in AAC Research: Decision Points
As demonstrated by the two preceding papers (Bedrosian, 1995; Higginbotham, 1995), the appropriate selection of subjects for conducting augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) research can be complex and, in many cases, unresolved. Our intention in presenting opposing views on the use of nondisabled individuals for AAC research was to highlight issues pertinent to subject selection. As...

Teaching children with autism is a challenging task for educators and parents, as the children display marked deficits in language and social behaviors. One of the major goals of an intervention program for children with autism is to provide them a method of functional communication and ample opportunities to practice these skills. For some children with autism, a communication system that uses...
متن کاملEffects of vibratory stimulation on sexual response in women with spinal cord injury.
Women with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) have predictable alterations in sexual responses. They commonly have a decreased ability to achieve genital sexual arousal. This study determined whether the use of vibratory stimulation would result in increased genital arousal as measured by vaginal pulse amplitude in women with SCIs. Subjects included 46 women with SCIs and 11 nondisabled control subjec...
متن کاملFeedforward control strategies of subjects with transradial amputation in planar reaching.
The rate of upper-limb amputations is increasing, and the rejection rate of prosthetic devices remains high. People with upper-limb amputation do not fully incorporate prosthetic devices into their activities of daily living. By understanding the reaching behaviors of prosthesis users, researchers can alter prosthetic devices and develop training protocols to improve the acceptance of prostheti...
متن کاملAccuracy of uniaxial accelerometer in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Wearable sensors have been developed and used in nondisabled adults. Little is known about their accuracy in patients with chronic disease. We tested the ActiHealth accelerometer, which measures step counts, in subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We determined the intra- and interdevice coefficients of variation (CVs). We assessed the accuracy of the device in 15 nondisa...
